Exact vs similar duplicate detection
Exact duplicate detection compares a cryptographic hash of the file bytes (MD5/SHA). Two files match only if every byte is identical. Fast and precise — but it misses a JPG re-exported at 80% quality.
Similar photo detection uses perceptual hashing (often average hash / aHash). The tool shrinks the image to a tiny grid, converts to grayscale, and builds a fingerprint from pixel patterns. Similar-looking images get similar fingerprints even when file size or format differs.
